Get Recognized
2019 Volunteer Group of the Year: Habitat Home Repair!
Door County Habitat for Humanity home repair volunteers were awarded the 2019 Group Volunteer of the Year. Each year the Volunteer Center of Door County honors the inspirational work of Door County volunteers and the nonprofits they serve. Gary Wemmert and Dan Hubing accepted the award on behalf of the Door County Habitat for Humanity Home Repair Team.
"What a wonderful surprise. This was great recognition for something that I enjoy doing. I believe in the Habitat purpose. We can help a bunch of people and make a difference in Door County!"
– Gary Wemmert - Habitat Volunteer, Home Repair Project Leader, former Board Member, Donor.
"Even though I don’t have construction skills, I help Door County Habitat for Humanity ‘build’ the future.
I volunteer for Habitat for Humanity because I know the importance of ‘home’ for me and many others. Behind every successful person, there is a sound support network. My support and strength comes from my family with the comfort and joy I feel at home. I contribute so others achieve this same type of satisfaction and foundation for success.
Those of us who are love Door County can give back by helping others achieve home ownership. Come join us!"
– Paula Latta - Habitat Volunteer, Board Member, Donor.
"I just do simple tasks: I’m only the ‘cleaner’. I’m like Bullwinkle - the sweeper at the end of the show. No matter how complex or simple, it’s recognized and really appreciated deep down. It’s a great feeling to have."
– Dan Hubing - Habitat Volunteer, Facilities, ReStore, former Board Member, Donor
Volunteer Roles
You don’t have to swing a hammer to build a Habitat Home. Every hand helps more families build strength, stability, and independence.
Some examples of volunteer opportunities are: Build Site Volunteers, Food Preparers/Donors for the build site, Home Repair Projects, Deconstruction Projects, Committee Members, Special Event Planning and Event Volunteers, Fundraising, Website/Marketing, ReStore Merchandise Associates and Merchandise Preparation, ReStore Cashier, Restore Recycling and Repair, Donation Pick Up Assistants, UpCycle room (Reclaim for a Cause - Refurbish furniture for sale in the ReStore), Community service, Administration activities, Social Media Management.
Construction Site Host
Site Hosts manage key aspects of the work site on build days (generally Tuesdays and Thursdays). They greet the construction volunteers and contractors as they arrive on site, assist with questions and issues, and assist in setting up water, snack and lunch.
Home Repairs
We do critical repairs to existing homes. These projects take place in a much smaller time frame. Activities could include: Roofing, Painting, Construction of a handicap accessible ramps, Landscaping, and Home safety repair.
Home Repair Project Leaders
These volunteers manage all aspects of Home Repair Projects - from initial inspection and project scope management with homeowner through completion. Estimates are generated to complete project application and review. The project lead identifies volunteer labor needs and length of project. Then, either leads the project execution or appoints another volunteer leader. Experience with home repair construction is helpful.
Deconstruction Project Leaders
These volunteers inspect potential deconstruction projects with homeowner, determine salvageable materials, volunteer labor and tool requirements to complete the project. The leader then coordinates timing of the project with the homeowner and volunteer coordinator to schedule. Experience with basic home construction is helpful.
Habitat Committee Roles
Home Build, Home Repair, Marketing, Website, PR, Event Management, Fund Raising and Grant Development, Homeowner Selection and Support, Finance, ReStore Operations Advisory Committee, Support Services, Volunteer Leadership, Board Development.
Artists for Habitat
Local artists donate their time and talent to bring creative habitats to your home. We have bird houses and butterfly houses for sale in our UpCycle room and at Habitat events. Photographers donated proceeds of Door County note cards to Habitat for Humanity. Read their stories and make a donation to Habitat by purchasing one of these Door County creations.
Thank You Volunteers!
We love to celebrate our volunteers and all the time they contribute to the Door County Habitat for Humanity community. Take a few minutes to document your time here – we are forever grateful!
