Door County Habitat for Humanity and the Door County Housing Partnership are working together to build two new homes in 2021. The first future homeowner in this partnership,  Melissa Krueger, has signed the partnership agreement. The collaboration between the Door County Housing Partnership and Door County Habitat for Humanity has been developing for the last two years. The two organizations are collaborating with the current home builds by Door County Habitat for Humanity on land within the Door County Housing Partnership trust. Because of the structure of the Door County Housing Partnership’s trust, the homes being built will be affordable now and remain affordable in the future.

Habitat for Humanity, Adopt a Soldier, the local Coast Guard and a grant from Home Depot team up to help a local veteran

Adopt-a-Soldier completes roof project Your generosity may have helped a World War II veteran in Sturgeon Bay get a new roof this summer. Adopt-a-Soldier Door County recently wrapped up the project after having already replaced a sewer drain and water main there for the 7th Street home. They also teamed up with Door County Habitat for Humanity, who repaired the veteran’s sidewalks. Adopt a Soldier Door County Founder Nancy Hutchinson and the organization’s committee was eager to help him out with a new roof as well.

A project that would bring 45 affordable rental units to Sister Bay received a big boost this month when the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) awarded $718,283 in annual tax credits to the project for the next 10 years. In a recent survey of local employers, many said they’re struggling to find seasonal workers. In the Door County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC), the biggest barrier cited to hiring seasonal workers was a lack of housing for seasonal employees (37.6%), followed by uncertainty about the arrival of J-1 visa workers (31.8%) and COVID-19 concerns (28.2%).

Door County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Lori Allen and Restore Manager Megan Dietz says there are just not enough ways to say thank you to the volunteers that support non-profit organizations like theirs.

Building a home in Door County, Kewaunee County, and everywhere else this summer will likely take time and cost more.  That's because there are fewer skilled trades employees and more competition for those who are available.

Springtime helps grow excitement for the upcoming year of home build and repair projects for Door County Habitat for Humanity. The pandemic delayed their work last year as organizations balanced their mission with safety protocols.
