Habitat ramps up community support

Door County Habitat for Humanity is making it easier for you to get out of your house. The organization kicked off its RAMP UP Door County project earlier this year to address the accessibility needs of many Door County residents.

It is uncharted territory for charitable leaders like Door County Community Foundation President and CEO Bret Bicoy, many of which who were not in their current roles in 1981, which was the last time inflation was this high. Bicoy believes that similar to how people treat the stock market, many will not change their charitable giving habits until they know that the current rate of inflation is here to stay.

Door County Habitat for Humanity could use your construction skills south of the county line later this year. An Algoma couple recently donated their business to Door County Habitat for Humanity after it was permitted to be a residential home. The plan is for Habitat volunteers to gut the building before turning it into a two-bedroom, one-bathroom home. Door County Habitat for Humanity was allowed to take on the project because Kewaunee County does not have its own local affiliate. Executive Director Lori Allen says it is another great opportunity to get someone into a home.

For nearly a decade, the Bank of America Study of Philanthropy: Charitable Giving by Affluent Households has been conducted in partnership with Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. It is the most comprehensive, longitudinal study of the giving habits of America’s wealthy families. The study’s 2021 version was recently released and offered insights and lessons for our charitable community.

The Door County Economic Development Corporation is looking at acquiring the necessary grants to build a modular home manufacturing facility. The organization would partner with Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, the Door County Homebuilder’s Association, and participating school districts to build homes that would have a price point of between $99,000 and $159,000.

Veteran and former nurse anesthetist Sean Grorich decided to pursue his lifelong love of coffee and founded Pinky Promise Coffee Roasters in January 2020. Along with being a great business owner, he has a kind heart and has founded Coffee for a Cause, he selects a flavor of coffee and donates 12% of the sales for the year to a designated nonprofit. This year, Door County Habitat for Humanity benefitted from the sales of Warm Up Winter flavored coffee.

You can expect to hear more about the Door County Housing Partnership in the coming months after the organization helped celebrate its involvement with Door County Habitat for Humanity’s 45th home build.

The smiles shown by the Krueger family and other community members shined through cloudy skies and wet, windy weather on Wednesday as Door County Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 45th home. Volunteers built two homes simultaneously this summer, but construction supervisor Chuck Stone noted it was supply chain woes that pushed the completion date back approximately a month. That did not matter much to Melissa Krueger, who was appreciative to have a home for herself and her four children.
