Highlights of the study
- Door County has a multi-faceted affordable housing problem. Key factors include long-standing shortage and quality of rental units, tourism and second home market, outdated building and zoning code requirements, lack of multi-family or denser housing types, housing higher construction costs, shortage of construction workers, more profitable to develop high-end housing.
- Housing issues impact all of Door County: Southern, Central and Northern.
- Housing issues impact all demographics of our citizens - seniors, families and single people.
- Recommended strategies are also multi-faceted and include: TIF proceeds supporting afforable housing, special real estate impact and transfer fees, special Resort Area Taxes, grants and loan programs, generated income from rental properties.
